When constructing a raised tiled outdoor area, the structure beneath the tiles determines how the deck performs for years to come. For this residential project in Hamilton, Sentinel Homes Waikato chose the TreadTech Aluminium Framing System to support 70m² of decking around the swimming pool and outdoor entertaining areas.
The Project
The brief called for a raised aluminium framing system to carry 20mm thick, 600 × 600mm structural tiles - with accurate height adjustment and a durable substructure essential to the result. TreadTech's framing was installed on adjustable pedestals over concrete footings, allowing the Sentinel Homes team to level the deck precisely before laying tiles, without shims or on-site guesswork.
UNEX Systems supported the project with framing layout diagrams and technical assistance, helping the construction team move through the framing stage efficiently.
TreadTech Components Used
The project incorporated a range of TreadTech components, including:
TreadTech 65 × 45mm Aluminium Joists
TreadTech 65 × 45mm Aluminium Bearers
Adjustable Pedestals
Self-Levelling Joist Cradles
Tile Support Gaskets
Additional framing and fixing components to suit the project requirements
These components work together as an integrated system, providing reliable support for raised tiled decks.
Why It Holds Up
Aluminium doesn't rot, warp, or corrode the way timber subframes can - a meaningful advantage under a tiled pool deck, where moisture exposure is constant. The pedestal system also keeps the membrane below accessible for drainage and ventilation, rather than trapping it under a solid subframe.
For Sentinel Homes Waikato, that meant a level, code-compliant framing solution with less time spent correcting for slope on site - the same outcome TreadTech is built to deliver on decks, balconies, and pool surrounds across New Zealand.
